Sequoyah Elementary School Reviews

After my son's 1st grade year @ Sequoyah we decided to pull him from this 'fine establishment'. After spending my elementary years there I wanted to give my kids the same experience I had. Sequoyah's motto is 'A happy place to learn'. Are you kidding me? Thankfully my child was not a 'problem child', and I never parked in the 'wrong' spot. Otherwise I suppose we would've felt the wrath, but I saw it plenty.

I like our school. The teachers are firm and expect the children to be well-behaved. They want what is best for the kids. They don't allow bullying and they teach kindness to others. Parents are helpful and busy at the school also. I believe my children are safe there. I like the fact that the teachers make them accountable for learning every day.

My child has attended Sequoyah since kindergarten. What exactly are they teaching our children there? I do not understand this school at all. How about the fall festival that is coming up? How much money does all this cost?

Sequoyah Elementary is an excellent school. My children were taught well and achieved in all academic areas. They both performed well on the state benchmark exam and went to fifth grade confident and well-prepared. The parent involvement is phenomenal. The extra curricular activities are fun and the programs enjoyable. I especially like the emphasis on math and language arts. Children are joining reading clubs that staff members offer during their lunch/recess break times. The children are allowed to present their favorite books in several creative ways including a character parade, TV broadcasts, etc. Many community volunteers spend time at the school tutoring students, fixing backpacks for needy children, reading aloud to classes, and making presentations about their fields of specialty. Sequoyah offers many opportunities for volunteers to enrich their students' learning. The teachers are nurturing and kind. I see well-behaved students and good manners being a part of the curriculum.

Sequoyah has the ability to be a great school. However to much time is spent on discpline, fear and threat of discpline. How many schools do you know that shut the lights off at lunch and yell 'shut up'. This is not respectful positive child friendly correction. The teachers are teaching to the test and are in fear failing( most of them). To offer selective creative methods, would be unheard of and not allowed. Young adults need to learn respect, not fear of discpline. Sequoyah needs to look @ the miltary stlye of order and discpline they currently act under. Respect, mutual understanding and acceptance of diversity. Learning for fun and mind expansion, not hammering to pass a test. Yes, teach this material but not excessive drilling. Teach positive fun learning @ k-4.
